The Exchange Club has a long history in Greenville, South Carolina. The Exchange Club of Greenville was organized in 1935 with a membership of 29 business and professional men. Sixty-seven years later, the Woodruff Road Exchange Club was Chartered on June 27, 2002 on the Eastside of Greenville with the help of the Original Greenville Exchange Club who had lost members because of age and other factors. The new Club was started with a diverse membership of 28 members.
The Exchange club of Greenville was formed by a group of active members and officers of the Junior Chamber of Commerce who had worked together a number of years in accomplishing many worthwhile projects. In time, they began to realize they would ultimately reach the age limit in their Junior Chamber of Commerce organization and to join different civic clubs would separate them.
Shortly thereafter, Professor R.B. Hellams of the Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, came to Greenville to offer to organize a local Exchange Club. After hearing how and why the National Exchange Club was formed, giving consideration to its purpose, its bylaws and Covenant of Service, the group decided the Exchange Club would meet their needs and was the answer to their problem. J. La Rue Hinson was elected the first president and the Greenville Exchange Club was Chartered on October 22, 1935. Three Greenville Exchange leaders later rose to the position of South Carolina District Presidents: C. Lawson Scott, Allen J. Graham and James H. Stroud.
The Greenville Exchange Club continued to carry out many worthwhile civic projects until 2002 when it ceased to operate as a club and the Woodruff Road Exchange Club emerged. The Woodruff Road Exchange Club still has the valued influence of the first club with three of its members still very active in the Exchange.
